Chili Cookoff - 31.05.05

(Click the thumbnails for the big picture.)

Saturday we entered the 6th Munich Chili Cook-off. My offering was called "Chili Hotter and the Well Cooked-Mince a.k.a Dave" and Kathrin's creation was "Chilly's Angels". We didn't win but anyone who tasted them had only good things to say to us about them. What they said when we weren't around might be another story entirely. The competition was held at the Isar Lounge by the Deutsche Museum and a great day out it was too. Enjoy the pics. Oh and my recipe is at the bottom of the page if anyone fancies giving it a whirl.

Ken & Lindsey sharing a little romantic moment. They do this approximately once every 45 seconds or so.

45 seconds later.

Tracy brushing up on his roping skills.

The judges hard at work.

Andrea having a bit of a swing.

Would the owner of the ass crack above please get in touch and we will happily remove the photo. Honest.

You will probably have noticed the rather large straw hat that Kathrin is wearing above. I purchased it from the bass player in the band for the grand price of a beer and a cigarette. Of course I told Kathrin that it was really expensive so shhhh, don't say a word to her.

A rather worried Aaron.

The prize giving ceremony. Simon won the "Anal Regret" prize for the hottest chili on the day. The winner was some blokey from Winsconsin.

I don't really know what to tell you about this one.

Cowboy hats clearly bring out the best in people.

The Elvii take to the stage.

After the judging and prize giving ceremony it was open season on the 33 chilis which had been entered. As far as we know nobody died from food-poisoning so that's something to be grateful for.

Cute little people.

Phil the Pro.

And that's that. My first Chili-Cookoff in Munich. Actually my first anywhere and a lot of fun it was. So, if you fancy knocking up a "Dave" here's the inside scoop. It may not be traditional chili and it may not be award-winning but it sure as hell was tasty.

"CHILI HOTTER and the Well-Cooked Mince"

a.k.a. Dave

(see, it's a play on the book, "HARRY POTTER and the Half-Blood Prince" but you knew that already right? Sure you did.)

Ingredients

1 tbl Coriander seeds, 1tbl Cumin, 1 tbl Oregano, 1 tbl Dried Chilis, 1/2 tbl Mixed Pepper, 2 medium sized onions, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 peppers, 500g Minced Meat, 800g can of peeled tomatoes, Mushroom Soy, Red Wine and most importantly, Liquid Smoke.

Method

Mix the coriander, cumin, oregano, chilis and pepper together. I bashed them up with a pestle & mortar.

Chop the onions and fry in a little oil until soft.

Add the mince to the frying pan and cook until brown.

Dump this lot into a decent sized pot and add the tomatoes, sauce n' all. Add a teaspoon of salt.

Add in a few splashes of mushroom soy, a dash and a bit of liquid smoke and a glass of red wine. Leave this to simmer for about twenty minutes or thereabouts.

While this is going on chop up the peppers and chuck them into the pot.

Add in the garlic (chopped finely) and the herb mix.

Give it a good old stir and then leave to simmer for about forty-five minutes.

Serve with fresh baguette a quality red wine. I can recommend a €2.49 Merlot from Hit which does the job nicely
