Fasnet in the Black Forest - 10.02.02

(Click the thumbnails for the big picture.)

We headed off early Saturday morning in the direction of Stuttgart. Ok, it was about 11:30, but at the weekend that's pretty early for me to be up and about. The drive was fine, but things went a bit pear shaped around Stuttgart when we couldn't find the route that we were supposed to take to bring us to Elzach. I think I drive around the city's ring-roads for about an hour. No good. Anyway, we finally arrived in the little town of Elzach and got ready to go out.

Saturday night we were in the town of Waldkirche which is 15km from Elzach. It was the night of the Witches Sabbat. It's an honour in the town to be chosen as a witch and only men are allowed do it. On the night we were there they had four new conscripts who were being granted their witch-status by the devil himself. And the whole town were dressed up and out to party.

The four new witches before they are given their masks and broomsticks.

The cutest little cow in Waldkirche

Ulrike & Madalina while we were all still relatively sober.

A happy German, a shy baby and what looks like a very stoned child.

More costumes. People put a lot of effort into their costumes here. The photos here are on a couple but unfortunately I ran out of film early on.
