Partnachklamm - 9th May, 2002

Thursday the 9th was a holiday here so myself, Kathrin & Paul headed off down to Partnachklamm for the day. The drive down to Garmisch was fairly uneventful although I did unintentionally play chicken with the oncoming traffic at one point. Jeepy handles better than I thought. Anyway, we got to the Olympic Ski Stadium in one piece and took the cable car up to the top. Decided to just get one-way tickets and see what happened from there.

The views are pretty impressive.

The couple who dress together, stay together. Or some such saying to go with how cheesy this pair look in their matching shirts.

Amazing scenery...

Having a little rest in the shade.

After wandering around the hills for a while, having a quick beer and oddly enough, listening to a Bavarian Jazz/Blues band, we headed down into the gorge. The sights & sounds in the river gorge are very impressive and the photos here can't do it justice, but it's the best I can do. Try to imagine walking through what is essentially a long winding cave, with occasional breaks where you can see the water gushing past. The sound at times is a deafening roar.

Well stocked for the winter.

My attempt at a Paulaner  poster advertisement. Beer adverts in this country are pretty straightforward. Generally you take a beer, stick a big mountain behind it and you're sorted. Actually, taking a mountain and sticking a beer in front of it is probably the preferred method. Variations on the theme include the basic beer & mountain combo and the addition of either sexy girls or out-doorsy-type blokes, or sometimes a combination of both. It's pretty much the same as their cigarette advertising. Anything to tell you that drinking & smoking will turn you into a healthy & fulfilled person.

The Olympic Ski Jumps, without the snow. Still fun, but the landings are a bitch.

Eventually got back to Jeepy (after a beer and some apfel strudel) and realised that I had left the lights on and the battery was flat as a pancake. Not good. There was a family close by getting into their car. Kathrin was dispatched to enquire as to whether they had a set of jump leads. A few minutes later we were up and running again. A very lucky break.
