Oktoberfest - Clothing

The traditional clothing worn by men and women at the Oktoberfest is almost as much part of the whole thing as beer and brezns.

Women wishing to get into the spirit of things generally go for a Dirndl which consists of a blouse of some sort and a wide skirt or dress. The skirt is usually knee length but they can also be full length or very short. It's totally up to the individual. In most cases though plenty of cleavage is the key to authenticity. Other styles worn by women include the linen n' leather look which is very popular. Click Here to read the full history of the Dirndl.

Here's a few examples.

Everyone is familiar with the idea of beer swilling Germans in leather shorts. Well now you too can be that guy. For men the only way to go is with Lederhosen (leather trousers) and a good drinking shirt. The trousers come in various lengths and there quite a variety of different looks which you can go for. There are a huge number of old and young people wearing lederhosen so if you decide to give it a go don't have to worry about standing out like a member of the Village People.

With both the mens and the womens costumes there are also quite a lot of accessories that you can get. Shoes, socks, hats, jackets, brooches and so on and so forth.

Here's a few places where you can buy your kit.

Pat's Boutique Sonnenstr 2, Lindwurmstr 82, Bayerstr 6, Dachauerstr 20, Weißenburgerstr 32, Sendlingerstr 21, Hohenzollernstr 44, Tal 14
Angermaier Landsbergerstr 103, Rosenthal 10
Loden Frey Maffeistraße 7
Skandal Ruppertstr 32 (opposite the KVR)
Dirndl-Dress.Com Online company (using eBay) who'll sell you all the Oktoberfest clothing you could ever want.
Dirndl-Eck Great shop for new and secondhand dirndls on Fürstenreidstr.

Of the ones above, Pat's Boutique is probably the cheapest as they stock mostly second-hand clothing. Top quality though. Loden Frey is at the higher end of the market. Skandal is probably my favourite of the lot due to the massive selection of stuff that they have and also it's a pokey little shop with good atmosphere. Most of the larger stores (such as Hertie, Kaufhof, C&A and Karstadt) also have a range of Trachten clothing so it's definitely worth taking some time and shopping around to get exactly what you want.
